A new-look Seahawks defensive line will feature a familiar face in 2023.

Jarran Reed, a former second-round pick of the Seahawks, signed with his former team on Thursday, giving Seattle a powerful and disruptive interior lineman to add to the mix.

"This is home for me," Reed said after signing. "I was drafted here, I played here for five years. I've been gone for a little bit, but now I'm back."

Reed returns to Seattle as part of a retooled defensive line following the release of Shelby Harris and Quinton Jefferson earlier this week.

Reed, a second-round pick out of Alabama in 2016, appeared in 72 games with 63 starts during his five seasons in Seattle, recording 22.0 sacks, 194 tackles and 58 quarterback hits. In 2020, Reed's last season with Seattle, he had 6.5 sacks and 14 quarterback hits while starting all 16 games, and in 2018 he had a career-best 10.5 sacks and 26 quarterback hits, making him just the third defensive tackle in franchise history to record 10 or more sacks in a season along with Hall of Famers Cortez Kennedy and John Randle.

After being released for salary cap reasons in 2021, Reed signed with Kansas City and started all 17 games, recording 43 tackles, 2.5 sacks and 12 quarterback hits. Last season Reed started 14 of 17 games played for Green Bay, again recording 2.5 sacks to go along with a career-high 52 tackles and 14 quarterback hits.

While his first stint with the Seahawks didn't end the way he wanted, Reed didn't hesitate when given a chance to return to Seattle.

"It's family-oriented here," he said. "There's no place like home, and Seattle's definitely home for me."

Reed's signing also reunites him with Clint Hurtt, who was previously his position coach and is now Seattle's defensive coordinator.

"That's my guy," Reed said. "He coached me, now he's the coordinator, and now we get to tie everything together."
